The Czech Sights on the
UNESCO List of World Cultural and Natural Heritage
(in the Czech Republic there are
altogether 12 protected conservation areas recognized by the UNESCO
inteernational organisation)

In 1972, the General Conference of UNESCO in Paris accepted The Convention of Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage. This document created the system of international protection of cultural and natural sights of extraordinary values that should be preserved for future generations. Within UNESCO there was established the International Committee for World Heritage that approves the most valuable sights suggested by member states. The Czech and Slovak Federative Republic joined this convention on 15 February 1991 and the Czech Republic took over its obligations from 1 January 1993. On the basis of Czech suggestions, the International Committee included, one after another, eleven sights in the List of World Heritage and decided about the criteria according to which these possessions were put on the list. In 1992, those were the historical centres of Prague, Cesky Krumlov and Telc, in 1994 the St John of Nepomuk Church of pilgrimage at Zelena hora in Zdar nad Sazavou, in 1995 the historical centre of Kutna Hora with the St Barbara Church and the Our Lady Cathedral at Sedlec, in 1996 the cultural landscape Lednice – Valtice, in 1998 the village of Holasovice and the gardens with the castle in Kromeriz, in 1999 the Litomysl Castle, in 2000 the Holy Trinity Column in Olomouc and Villa Tugendhat in Brno and, finally, the St Prokop Basilica and Jewish Quarter (Zamosti) in Trebic in 2003. One of the obligations of the member states following from the entry of the possession in the List og World Heritage is monitoring and processing the monitoring reports about the condition of these sights according to a binding outline. The responsible offices for the preservation of historical monuments ensure the monitoring of these sights.
