Villa Tugendhat
Villa Tugendhat is situated in
residential district Black Fields in Brno. It was built by German architect
Ludwig Miese van der Rohe (1886-1969).
Fritz and Greta Tugendhat contacted the architect in 1927, before their wedding. The company Eisler from Brno built the villa in 1929. The newly married couple moved to the villa already at the end of 1930. But they had to leave it in 1938, when Nazis came to our country. After the war, villa Tugendhat was used for various purposes, for example for medical purposes. In 1980, villa Tugendhat became the possesion of the city.
There
are three floors in the villa. The entry isn’t very attractive because of the
fallen plaster. In the third floor there is the entrance, bedroom, bathroom,
garage and caretaker’s flat. In the second floor there is a study, dining room,
kitchen and bathroom. The first floor contains a machine room for manipulating
the windows. There also is an onyx wall, which is the most interesting thing of
the whole villa. When the sun is shining on the wall, it’s colour changes to
pink. And finally there is a large garden with lots of trees.
Villa Tugendhat is one of the best examples of comfort living in the Czech Republic and on 14 December 2001 it has been declared as UNESCO possesion.
Responses of the classmates in a small survey on villa Tugendhat
Lubos Polak
Villa Tugendhat is nice, but I don’t like functionalistic style, in which it was built. Nevertheless it surprised me inside! I liked the beautiful onyx wall and the luxury chairs most of all.
Zuzana Trestikova
The villa captivated me with the fact that the structure of the whole building has been well thought out and that nothing was needless there. But the main disadvantage is in high financial upkeep. On the outside the villa doesn’t look so attractive, but inside you will be convinced about the opposite.
Vera Sedlakova
At the first sight, the villa seemed so rigorous to me but afterwards I viewed it all and found out that the architect mixed rigorousment with purpose and elegance. Most I liked the nice onyx wall and the fact, that after you had shut down the windows in dining and living room, it looked like you were in the garden.
Nada Chytkova
The outside of the villa didn’t appeal to me, it looked like a common house. But when I went into the main room, I liked the onyx wall at first sight. And the equipment of study and living room assumed me too! Big windows and beautiful garden also surprised me. The only thing I didn’t like indoors was the equipment of bedroom.
Vojtech Krejska
Most of all I liked the onyx wall in villa Tugendhat. What a pity that I haven’t seen it in the the moonshine or sunshine. Certainly the details took me which are excellently made, for example the stand of a table. A lot of space and daylight caused by large windows were definitely positive too.
